A Chinese air passenger has been detained by police and put under investigation after he accidentally opened an emergency door to "get some fresh air".

The man was reportedly under the impression that turning the lever would open a window, but instead delayed the take-off by over an hour while a whole round of security checks were conducted again.

The unnamed passenger was in the city of Chengdu, capital of China’s south-western Sichuan Province, aboard China Southern Airlines flight CZ3693 board for Urumqi, capital of north-western Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, when the incident happened.

Apparent feeling claustrophobic in the Boeing 737, the man risked the lives of all 130 passengers plus flight crew in the craft when he approached the emergency door and pulled hard on the lever.

The door popped open ? and even shocked the passenger himself, who thought he would simply be "rolling down the window".

The aeroplane, which was taxiing before take-off at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, was brought to an emergency stop by the captain as flight crew restrained the passenger and informed airport authorities.

The man was detained by police, while the flight took off an hour later after another round of equipment inspections.

Reports said passengers who cause losses to airlines companies by deliberately opening plane doors can face fines and even jail time.

The offender also risks being blacklisted from all forms of air travel.

China’s Civil Aviation Administration recorded 15 separate cases of passengers opening emergency doors, which was mainly the result of ignorance on the part of the travellers who were not aware of the strict regulations and punishments for breaching them.

The passengers were all banned from air travel for specified periods of time.

It is currently unclear what punishment the offender in the latest case will face.
